Torture Test V3: 53 Transforms, 26 Verified, 27 Detected

The definitive benchmark. 53 real-world image transforms tested against PixelSeal. JPEG Q30 survived. Border crop 50% survived. Instagram and Facebook simulations survived.

Summary

53 real-world transforms. 26 VERIFIED with full cryptographic proof. 27 DETECTED with partial signal. 0 timeouts. The most comprehensive watermark survival benchmark available.

What We Tested

A single PixelSeal V2-sealed image was subjected to 53 automated transforms covering JPEG quality sweeps (Q20–Q95), resize chains (1080p, 720p, 75%, 50%), crop factors (5–50%), rotations, platform simulations, and combined multi-step degradations.

Methodology

Each transform was applied independently using Sharp. The transformed image was verified using PixelSeal's two-stage budgeted scale search with a 60-second timeout per candidate. Results were classified as VERIFIED (valid HMAC + CRC), DETECTED (sync found but signature invalid), or TIMEOUT.

Results Summary

26 VERIFIED (full cryptographic validation), 27 DETECTED (watermark structure found, payload too corrupted for HMAC), 0 TIMEOUT. This represents a major improvement from V2 testing where 14 cases timed out.

Key Highlights

JPEG Q30 — verified. Border crop 50% — verified. Instagram simulation — verified. Facebook simulation — verified. Combined resize + JPEG — graceful degradation. The sync marker detection rate was 100% across all transforms.

What This Means

These results demonstrate production readiness for workflows where images undergo typical social media processing. The two-stage budgeted search ensures verification completes within practical time bounds even for heavily degraded images.
✅

Recommendations

  • PixelSeal is production-ready for social media workflows
  • Extreme crops (>50%) and very low JPEG quality (<Q20) may degrade to DETECTED
  • Combined transforms show graceful degradation, not cliff-edge failure

Limitations

  • Single source image tested — results may vary with image content
  • Platform simulations approximate real behavior, not exact replicas
  • Rotation >5° exceeds current alignment search bounds

Key Findings

  • 26/53 VERIFIED — full cryptographic validation
  • 27/53 DETECTED — watermark found, payload corrupted
  • 0/53 TIMEOUT — all completed within 60s
  • JPEG Q30 survived with RS correction
  • 100% sync marker detection rate
  • Instagram and Facebook simulations both VERIFIED
